Peter Maybury (MA) works as an artist, graphic designer, and musician. With formal training in visual communications in Dublin and London, his creative practice has expanded to encompass design for print and screen, wayfinding systems, film, sound, artworks for exhibition, and curation. Peter’s holistic approach sees him work at the interstices of several disciplines.
With a track record from nearly 20 years working to the highest degree of excellence in visual communication and design for print and screen, his broad experience has developed into extensive knowledge taking in all aspects of design, editorial, pre-press and printing.
Peter has a wide-ranging experience in working with creative practitioners and institutions, editors and curators, including over 100 individual artists publications, and more than 40 group show publications, for clients in Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, UK, US, Italy and Canada. His design work includes artist’s monographs, artist’s books, exhibition, wayfinding systems, collection and event specific publications (print and digital), and academic and critical content, and this work has been featured in key design publications including the seminal Emigre magazine.
Peter has released recordings with Emigré Music, Sub Rosa and Fällt, and collaborates on two music projects – Thread pulls, and Rainfear.
He curates the Messages Sonores sound art project, which has included collaborations with improvising musician Toshimaru Nakamura, and artist Marie-Pierre Richard. With Dennis McNulty he co-curated the Underground exhibition, Dublin, 2008.
His work with Tom dePaor emerges from the disciplines of architecture, design, digital film, installation, public art, text, curation and landscape. This output has included the film “Relayer” for the “Delay” armature first shown at “The Lives of Spaces” at the Venice Architectural Biennale, 2008; the EV+A invited ‘Temperance’ (2010), a public sculpture sited at the Hunt Museum; co-curation Irish Pavilion, 12th Architecture Biennale, Venice 2010 (which toured Ireland 2011-12); the 2013 film ‘These islands‘, which was presented at The Everyday Experience, Irish Museum of Modern Art, 3 November 2013 – 26 January 2014; and ‘Study’ (2015), a film made at ETH Zurich for the exhibition ‘Book for Architects’.
Peter’s Gall Editions imprint has published numerous titles including ‘Reservoir’ which describes ‘Temperance’ ( dePaor, Maybury, 2010); the five volume unbound book ‘of de Blacam and Meagher’ for the 2010 national Pavilion, Venice Biennale, the book ‘Of‘, which addresses the curation of that exhibition; ‘Notations’, and eight volume publication co-edited with Paul Clarke and including work by Tom dePaor, O’Donnell Tuomey, and Grafton Architects; and the part manifesto, part process journal Make Ready which explores 20 years of Peter’s output.
Peter has lectured widely including eight years as Visiting Lecturer at DLIADT, and four years with the MSc in Multimedia in Trinity College Dublin. From 2011-14 Peter was External Examiner at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). Peter was a main stage speaker at Offset (Dublin, 2015), and has given lectures at amongst others UCD and DIT, Dublin; University of Chester and Sheffield Hallam University.
