This is the prelude sequence of a film art work in progress Birds of my weakness 2017.
This work takes a narrative initiation from Apollinaire’s early surrealist and feminist play “The Mammaries of Tiresias” 1917.
“Birds of...” reimagines Apollinaire’s gender absurd character in the context of contemporary feminism.
The film performance succeeding the prelude sequence will be shot on sharp quality digital 16mm, and cut with interstitial shots of textured Super8 imagery.
My film adaptation of Appollinaire’s play will use dance, sound and corporeal expression to explore the performative aspects of gender through bodily affect. My prose has been influenced by readings of Luce Irigary and Simone de Beauvoir. The work will use strategies of subversion and humour to play with cliches of gender and our everyday domestic lives.
I will work with two performers (one a dancer) in a domestic space to shoot the film and with a composer to create the music for the work which is partly based on domestic recordings.
