Synopsis

'Carve Up draws upon questions around the nature and conception of species, presenting the viewer with a speculative and experimental natural history. Stemming from the artist's research into the rapid hybridization of orchids and related problems of classification, the work intersects with a complex set of questions in the philosophy of science, which relate to the notion of species as an enduring and pernicious uncertainty. The video work considers the weak spots around species' boundaries and harnesses this research to consider how the notion of species might be perceived expansively. Carve Up exploits the slippery ontological status of species' definitions to bring together two very disparate groups – humans and orchids – to speculate on their potential connectedness.

Carve Up features an electronic score made with musician and frequent collaborator Andrew Fogarty and was commissioned for The Red Stables Summer School 2013, a Dublin City Council Arts Office initiative supported by the Arts Council.'
