Synopsis

'Dust' was made as a result of sweeping the floor in preparation for making new work in an old house where I was based. The illuminated dust was streaming through the window in strong rays and I began recording it. As a child I would try to ‘hold’ such dusty rays of light, reaching out my hands to touch one as it hovered in full view, really believing in the moment that it must be physical. The dust in this preparatory film made the light tangible, it became the light’s channel. The final film referenced the photographic desire to etch and project invisible things. Visually it is also echoes the light rays from a projector beam and the role of photographic equipment in recording time. (This film is often installed with a projected 120 mm slide of the broom used to sweep the dust, in a further nod to the history of photography through Fox Talbot’s ‘Open Door’ 1877.)
