Solitude: interrogating the conventional sense of self

Marcus Meldon

Description

‘The artwork explores how solitude intensely scrutinises the idea of the ‘’self’’. Consciousness isolated in silence probes the established notion of an ‘’I’’ dwelling in one’s head. The narrative explores how solitude can potentially shatter this feeling of the ‘’self’’ and through the shards of ego rewards such as coherence with nature, clarity of thought and reflective introspection can be briefly grasped. But extinguishing the sensation of the ‘’self’’ is a painful pilgrimage and the payment is often fleeting and subtle. The video piece is set up to run in a continual loop representing the constant flow of consciousness. The still visuals juxtaposed to the restless voice investigates how a mind responds to solitude in the ‘‘sublime’’. The images and the voice marry for a brief moment as the mind experiences a deeper connection to its surroundings. The artwork offers the potential to measure the worth of this ephemeral communion against the strenuous journey of attaining it.’
