MExIndex aims to collect, collate, and make information available on Irish-based experimental film/moving image works and to promote critical writing about this visual art genre.
The MExIndex is a searchable database of experimental moving image works classified as Irish either because their creator is Irish or the work relates to Irish culture and society. The works displayed on the MExIndex website are of particular relevance and merit, and have been selected from an extensive underlying unpublished database. The process of selection takes place on a regular basis, allowing the MExIndex website to continually expand its offering of Irish-based works.
Experimental film making/artists moving images is an area of the visual arts which concentrates on the questioning how film can be perceived in a contemporary context, and its impact when conventional approaches are deconstructed. It is fundamentally a way of seeing the moving image free from preconditions and the carapace of conventions.
In this section we showcase examples of how works have been explored by our visiting curators. This illustrates some of the many ways there are of finding commonalities between works. It is aimed at those wishing to select works for exhibition or screenings from this ever growing body of visual artists' moving images.
