Bea McMahon
Artist Biography
Bea McMahon was born in the Republic of Ireland. Her early works were installations with moving image works that were influenced by ideas within structuralist filmmaking. The works tried to find a poetic form of agency between animals and the world.
Recently she has been doing theatre in the gallery space. She writes geometrical script-scores that are coupled to the performers and sometimes to sculptural forms. In these works she is trying to unearth the force and theatricality of political language, economic language and the language of desire that enters the real and the active.
Recent projects include performances at Kisses Sweeter than Wine, Treignac Projet, France; Lost and Found, Musiek Gebouw, Amsterdam; The Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw 2016; FLAM VI Amsterdam; The XII Baltic Triennial, Vilnius 2015; Bob’s your Uncle, Kunstverein, Amsterdam; W139, Amsterdam; Via Farini, Milano 2014 and and solo exhibitions BOM at CCA Derry 2015 and Cover at Salzburg Kunstverein 2014. Other exhibitions include A Modern Panarion; glimpses of the Occult, Hugh Lane City Gallery, Dublin 2014; In the House of Mr and Mrs X, Temporary Gallery, Köln, 2013; Evil under the Sun, Volcano Extravaganza, Stromboli, 2013; and solo projects Bea McMahon, Treignac Projects, Treignac, France 2013, Root Temple Bar Gallery and Studios 2012; Warp and Woof, CCA Glasgow 2011;
She edits a zine SIC Intertrashional launched with performances during the earth’s soltices and she composes and performs with the lip-synching franchise Dina from Egypt
She has done residencies at Flattime House, London, The Mattress Factory, Pittsburg and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam and Via Farini, Milan. She is in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and FRAC Midi- Pyrenees.
