Vivienne Dick

Vivienne Dick was born in Donegal in 1950 and studied at University College Dublin and later at University of the Arts, London. Between 1977 - 1982 she lived in New York, part of a group of filmmakers working mainly in Super 8, whose affiliation to the music and aesthetic of punk became known as 'No Wave'. This early work, which initially screened at music venues in NYC, was later shown across the US including venues such as MOMA ,NY , Walker Arts Centre and The Whitney, and internationally, including Edinburgh and Berlin Film Festivals. Dick lived in London for 15 years and was a member of The London Filmmakers Coop, producing work in 16mm and video. While there, she received a number of awards from The British Arts Council and commissions from Channel 4 and the BBC.

Dick taught Film in GMIT Galway for many years and has held master classes in many colleges including Goldsmith, Chelsea and Westminster, L'École des hautes études, Paris, Bergen Academy of Art & Design, Glasgow University and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She has received a number of Production Awards from the Arts Council of Ireland and her work has shown extensively at festivals and museums in Europe. Her most recent film Red Moon Rising, (2016), was shown at The London Film Festival and at Oberhausen. Dick has had retrospectives at Crawford, Cork (2009) and Tate Modern, London (2010) with an upcoming retrospective at IMMA (Dublin) in 2017. Dick is a member of Aosdana and has work in the collections of the Irish Film Archive, Anthology Archives, the BFI and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
